Flower Pot Gift for Teacher

I did it! I made my first post!

It feels so good to get my little blog up and running. As I mentioned before, we are in the process of packing and moving sometime at the end of the school year, so you'll have to excuse my lack of creativity at the moment. I have a million projects floating around my head, but there just aren't many of them getting accomplished until we get into the new house. All my stuff is packed up in boxes!

But with the end of school just around the corner, I thought I'd share with you a gift I made for my boy's teachers at Christmas time. I saw this project here and thought it would be the perfect way to show their teachers how much we appreciate them.

I purchased 2 small clay pots from Hobby Lobby (50% off!) and painted the bases black and the rims yellow. I think using chalkboard paint on the base would be super cute to write messages, but all I had was black. Once dry, I lined up a tape measure around the rim and taped to hold it in place. Using a fine point black Sharpie, I drew a line every 1/2 inch. I removed the tape measure and filled in the remaining lines and numbers. This was a little time consuming making each little mark perfect, but it turns out really cute! I made a "Thank you for helping me grow" tag and attached using a red and white polka dot ribbon. Since it was winter when we gave the pots to the boy's teachers I didn't fill it with flowers, but there are so many pretty blooms you could fill it with now!

I promise soon I will have step-by-step pictures for you on future projects. I need to get in the habit of photographing everything I do! Speaking of photos... I've had the same style digital camera since probably high school. Now that I'm starting this blogging adventure I'm definitely going to need to upgrade my camera! What would you suggest for a new camera? I would love to get your feedback!

  2. I have a rotten camera myself so I can't help you there. Take pictures in the daytime in front of a window for natural light. That helps my pictures a lot. Today i saw a chicken painted in black chalkboard paint. I think I'm doing a project with that soon. I'm subscribing to all comments so I can see what other bloggers suggest for a good camera. Best wishes with your blog. Linda

  3. Welcome to Blog Land! Stopped by from Homemaker On A Dime...I love your gift idea..especially being a teacher's wife! I'd love for him to bring one home! :) I'm following via GFC. Your pic looks fine to me. I would say focus first on Blog Photo Tips (you can google it...there are oodles of choices to read) and then you'll see if you need to upgrade. If it's not broke, don't fix it - is my motto.

  16. What a great project to start off with! Having some flowers in these pots would really brighten up a classroom. As for cameras, I actually just use a point and shoot and I'm generally pretty satisfied with my pictures. The key is knowing how to take the pictures. Try to use indirect natural light with no flash. And always think about how to stage things. You'll get in the habit! Also, I featured you on today's Saturday Show Off!

  17. Welcome to blogging! You are brave to launch and move house at the same time -- off to a good start though. Camera -- I started with a point and shoot because it was easier and then upgraded to DH's Canon Rebel after I learned a bit more about photography -- absolutely love it and he may never get it back! Check out some blogs on craft and food photography (in your "spare" time!) and you'll find loads of helpful tips! Thanks so much for sharing on Busy Monday at A Pinch of Joy. Looking forward to seeing you again!

  20. Liz - I actually did this as you recommended! However, after planting flowers in pots & watering - the paint started to bubble. Can you tell me where I went wrong? I used primer, yellow paint on top & chalkboard paint on bottom. Disappointed...must have done something wrong. :(

    1. Oh bummer! I didn't get a chance to plant any flowers in the one I made since I gave it to my son's teachers as a Christmas gift, so the acrylic paint I used was fine. And I know she uses it as a pencil holder on her desk now. But without seeing it firsthand, I would say that using a paint or spray paint for outdoor use might be the best to way to avoid any paint bubbles. I recently painted directly onto a clay pot using regular white spray paint, and after planting and watering, it hasn't gotten any paint bubbles as of yet. If the bubbling was minimal maybe you could lightly sand the area and spray paint over it to help smooth it out. I hope this helps Cynthia!

    2. Thank you! I used interior/exterior paint. Perhaps, next time, I could using acrylic spray paint.
