I love creating beautiful table settings, especially for the holidays. One of the best parts of Christmas is gathering around the table together, sharing food prepared with love. Why not take a few extra minutes to set a beautiful backdrop for all that yummy food?
I created a Book Page Table Runner for my post on Setting the Perfect Holiday Table, and today I have a simple tutorial to show you how I made it!
I love the look of old book pages and sheet music and wanted to incorporate that into my table setting. But the thought of trying to glue all those pages together seemed like such a hassle. So I started brainstorming and after rummaging through my craft closet came up with this solution...
Shelf liner!
I took an old roll of shelf liner and rolled it out across my table, pattern side down. I cut it just shy of the length of the table and weighted the ends down so it wouldn't curl.
Next I tore pages out of an old book that no one reads anymore and cleaned up the torn edge with scissors. My bookworm husband cringed the whole time!
{ TIP } The older and more worn the pages are, the better. It will add to the worn, vintage look!
I peeled back a few feet of the shelf liner backing,
and started sticking the pages onto the shelf liner, staggering and stacking the pages as I went. Don't worry about perfection; you want them to look like a pile of loose book pages scattered across the table.
Here's what the finished product looks like:
And here it is underneath my holiday table setting!
This was so simple to make, and the book pages are such a great canvas to add layers of fabric, flowers, or candles on top. The runner doesn't overwhelm the table with pattern, it just serves as a beautiful backdrop and adds gorgeous detail to a plain tablecloth.
Your guests will be in for a huge treat with a special table runner like this!
